Sounds like an interesting trip so far. IMHO, you plan too much tho.
I also know what you mean about those crappy MI motels. I stayed in one and the only thing I could think of was the theme music from "Deliverance". I was carrying a piece with me and I had it tucked under the pillow.
I hope you go up to the Lake Superior shoreline. Very pretty!
